Noise control program

A noise abatement programme is a systematic plan to prevent and reduce exposure to noise in the workplace. The employer must draw up and implement a noise abatement programme when the worker's exposure to noise exceeds the upper action value. A noise abatement programme is an organisation's plan to reduce the exposure of workers to noise. A programme must be in place whenever the noise exposure of any worker exceeds the upper action value. The action values are defined in the Government Decree on the protection of workers from the risks related to noise.

Key steps in the noise abatement programme

  • Noise source and exposure mapping - Noise levels are measured and assessed in the work environment.
  • Risk assessment - Assess the effects of noise on the health and safety of workers.
  • Design and implementation of abatement measures - Selecting appropriate measures to reduce noise, such as noise barriers, maintenance of machinery and protective equipment.
  • Monitoring and evaluation - Monitoring the evolution of noise levels and the effectiveness of the programme.
  • Training and information - Raising staff awareness of the harmful effects of noise and the use of protective equipment.

Noise in the work environment can cause hearing damage, including permanent hearing loss and tinnitus. In addition, noise increases stress, reduces concentration and increases the risk of accidents, as it can make it difficult to detect hazards in noisy environments. For these reasons, noise management is an essential part of health and safety at work.

The noise management programme ensures that the employer integrates noise management into the risk assessment and management of the workplace. It guides the design and implementation of measures such as technical changes to noise sources, work organisation and the use of personal protective equipment. It also helps to monitor the effectiveness of noise abatement measures and to make any necessary corrections on the basis of the principle of continuous improvement.

Preparing and updating the document

Protect can help identify noise sources and identify potential noise exposures for workers. Protect can also help you to develop a noise abatement programme and develop your operations to control potential sources of noise and ensure the safety of your workers.

Documents in PRO24

The Protectin PRO24 system can be used to develop a noise abatement programme and to disseminate it to staff and relevant stakeholders. Documentation is easy to maintain and update through the system interface.
