Chemical inventory and risk assessment

The use of chemicals is essential in many industries - but it also comes with significant responsibilities. Not only do companies have to comply with legal requirements, they also have to ensure the safety of their workers and protect the environment. A well-designed chemical inventory and effective chemical risk management are key tools to ensure safe and responsible operations.

Chemical risk management - a holistic approach

Chemical risk management refers to all measures to prevent and manage the risks posed by chemicals to workers, premises and the environment. This includes, but is not limited to:

  • Chemical risk assessment by site and process
  • Design and deployment of protection solutions
  • Emergency action plans
  • Training and communication development for staff
  • Compliance with legislation and REACH obligations

The chemical inventory is a key tool for chemical safety in the workplace, enabling employers to manage the risks posed by chemical agents systematically and in accordance with the law. It provides a basis for hazard identification, exposure assessment and planning of control measures. It ensures that workers have access to up-to-date information on chemicals, their uses and hazards, thus enabling them to work safely in all situations. Without a list of chemicals, it is not possible to carry out a reliable risk assessment or to meet legal obligations in the field of chemical safety.

The obligation to draw up a list of chemicals is based directly on the Occupational Safety and Health Act and the Government Decree on Chemical Agents at Work, which require employers to identify and assess chemical hazards in the workplace. These requirements are also supported by the Chemicals Act and the EU REACH and CLP Regulations, which require, among other things, the maintenance of safety data sheets and the proper classification of chemicals. The legislation provides a clear framework where the chemical inventory is not an optional tool but a mandatory part of a responsible and safe working environment.
