Introducing the expert: Niklas Kortell brings safety insight and fluency in a second language to the team

In August 2023, Niklas Kortell, a Safety and Quality Specialist with a diverse background, joined Protect's Kokkola office. A long career at the airport and a couple of years in a company manufacturing grinding machines have given him an excellent understanding of safety issues.

Niklas originally studied to become a vehicle mechanic and later completed his knowledge with a specialised technical qualification in management. His career path took him to Kokkola Airport, where he worked for 12 years as a supervisor in baggage services. However, the corona pandemic quickly changed the situation and led to a career change for Niklas. For a couple of years, Niklas worked as a foreman in the assembly of grinding machines before he was called to Protect for an interview.

Both previous jobs have given Niklas a strong insight into safety issues.
- The company I worked for, which manufactured grinding machines, took safety issues very seriously. In the airport job, too, safety was very much in the forefront at all times, as incidents could easily have arisen from careless work.

Meeting customers and learning new things makes the job interesting

Niklas enjoys his job as a Quality and Safety Specialist at Protect, meeting customers and making new contacts. The most surprising thing for him was the wide range of services Protect offers its customers. Every day brings different tasks and people. The diversity of clients and the strong support of the work community have made working for Protect a particularly enjoyable experience.

-Drafting emergency plans in the field could get monotonous, but the varied job description keeps you interested. The work is very self-directed, but you can always spar with colleagues if you face challenging tasks.

Niklas has had the opportunity to work as a HESQ expert, draw up emergency plans and act as a safety coordinator. Niklas is particularly interested in the role of safety coordinator, as he is fascinated by the opportunity to follow the construction process from the very beginning until completion. Niklas' long-standing interest in machinery and equipment has also been a positive strength in this job, and his strong command of Swedish has brought opportunities to take on assignments, especially from companies with a second national language as their working language.

- In less than a year, a lot of diverse know-how has been acquired, but there is still a lot to learn and that keeps the job interesting.
