Jenni Ahponen – From a background at Tukes to practical safety work
Jenni Ahponen has been with Protect for just over a year and works in Tampere as a safety and quality specialist. Her areas of expertise include chemical safety and matters related to Tukes requirements, where she assists clients in ensuring compliance and developing safe operations.
From Chemical Safety Requirements to Practice
Before joining Protect, Jenni worked as a senior inspector at Tukes. Her responsibilities included the supervision of large-scale chemical facilities, licensing, and the evaluation of documents related to chemical safety. This background provides a strong regulatory perspective to support our clients—Jenni understands what requirements are placed on companies and how they are assessed in practice.
At Protect, Jenni now applies her expertise from the other side of the table. She drafts and updates key chemical safety documents for clients, such as safety data sheets, operating procedures, and internal emergency response plans. In addition, she advises clients on how they can improve chemical safety and comply with legal requirements. Jenni also serves as an occupational safety manager at several client sites.
Jenni’s approach to work emphasizes practicality, firmness, and the ability to make requirements easy to understand. She helps clients identify what is essential in their operations—and ensures that the solutions work in practice. This is particularly important in chemical safety, as obligations apply to a company even when its operations are not large-scale or obvious from the perspective of regulatory oversight. It is essential to understand what safe handling of chemicals entails and how risks can be identified in a timely manner.
Motivation comes from varied work
What motivates Jenni most in her work is the variety of her tasks and the opportunity to continuously develop her skills. In addition to paperwork, her role as a specialist involves client visits, meetings, and familiarizing herself with facilities, and each client relationship brings new perspectives. The goal is for the client to gain concrete benefits and clarity in their own operations—not just documents, but practical solutions for everyday life.
In her free time, Jenni unwinds from work by staying active and spending time with her family. Her daily routine includes taekwondo, outdoor activities, and her children’s hobbies. In the summer, she finds balance through spending time at the cottage and gardening, which has expanded to include a greenhouse.
