A safety expert to support the development of a safety culture

JAKE The building already had a strong safety foundation, but the company wanted to bring in more expertise and practical approaches to risk management. The aim was to reduce risks and accidents on site and to ensure that safety was not just an obligation, but an integral part of the company's everyday life at every stage of the process.

"We wanted a partner who would get to know the staff and the operators in the area and who would make the cooperation smooth, building a strong foundation for future projects," Ville Ollila, Production Manager at JAKE Construction says.

Concrete steps to improve safety on construction sites

Protect's safety expert was tasked to support JAKE Building in developing a safety culture. The cooperation started with a comprehensive safety mapping, which reviewed the current situation on the sites, identified strengths and identified areas for improvement. The safety training sessions then covered risk factors and how to prevent them.

At the same time, site-specific safety rounds and TR measurements were carried out to assess the safety situation on site. These provided concrete recommendations for necessary improvements.

"In addition, risk management processes were updated so that potential incidents can be identified and prevented before they occur," Ollila adds.

For JAKE Building, it was important that safety thinking was not just the responsibility of the management, but that it became part of the everyday life of the whole organisation, a lasting change in attitude towards safety throughout the organisation. With the help of Protect's safety expert, employees and supervisors were given clear instructions on how to take safety into account in their daily work.   Pirre Laitala of Protectin and Ville Ollila of JAKE Rakennus on a site visit

    Benefits of a safety expert

"The effects of the cooperation were quickly visible on the construction sites," says Ollila.

With the support of Protect's safety expert, employees became more safety conscious and started to actively identify and report potential risks. Safety became a common issue on the site.

The improved safety culture also contributed to the efficiency of the site. With clear safety practices in place on the sites, work went smoothly without unnecessary interruptions. It also ensured that all regulatory requirements were met, reducing administrative burden and the stress associated with inspections.

In the experience of JAKE Building, the development of safety practices also brought new benefits to subcontractor cooperation. By harmonising the practices of the sites, cooperation with partners became smoother and more efficient. Clear rules created a safer framework for everyone working on the site.

Site safety is an ongoing process

JAKE Building sees safety not just as a single project, but as an ongoing development. The safety culture created with the help of Protect's safety expert is now an established part of the company's operations, but the progress does not stop there.

The safety expert compiled a report on the project, in which he listed the ideas for further work. JAKE Construction wants to ensure that safety practices are kept up to date and constantly evolve to meet the changing challenges of the working environment.

"With the help of Protect's expert, we were able to take our safety culture to a new level. Safety is now a real part of our everyday life, and our sites are smoother and safer than before," says Ollila.

The cooperation between JAKE Building and Protect's safety expert shows that when safety is invested in the long term, the effects are felt throughout the company. A well-organised safety culture not only reduces accidents, but also improves working conditions, increases efficiency and strengthens the company's reputation as a responsible operator.

"We also want to be a pioneer in the safety of our construction sites, and working with an expert enables us to do that. This is not just project-specific work, but part of our continuous development," Ollila sums up.
